Story of Hope

Allegheny HYP Club, 619 William Penn Pl, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Attendance limit: 100

Come join us for a “Story of Hope” conversation with Hanifa Nakiryowa in support of the Center for Rehabilitation of Survivors of Acid and burns Violence (CERESAV), an organization she founded in Uganda after surviving acid attack violence which left her with a completely disfigured face and blinded in one eye. Hanifa has been featured in many local national and international magazines, Radios and TV interviews as a true example of resilience. She will be featured in the Pittsburgh Magazine November issue so look out for her story there too.

The event will include a networking/cocktail hour, an interview by Cristina Rouvalis; a renowned journalist, writer and editor with Pittsburgh’s leading magazines, and an opportunity to bid on great items to raise much-needed funds to support women in need.

The mission of CERESAV Uganda is to provide lifesaving medical, nutritional and psychosocial support services to patients in the hospital. Acid attack violence is a premeditated form of gender-based violence which disproportionately affects women and children. The intent of the perpetrator is not to kill, but to maim and disfigure, although some cases lead to death due to lack of medical care. CERESAV’s work to raise awareness has progressed over the past five years with ambassadors now leading the ZERO Tolerance campaign. The focus now is to save lives in the hospital where patients are at high risk of dying.
